Career Discovery Weekly Digest: Build Skills You Can Put to Work

Date: 12th October 2026

TL;DR

  • TCS's latest results put enterprise AI back in focus, but company revenue is not a promise of fresh hiring. Look for the work behind the headline.

  • IIT Madras's career-path figures include more than employment. Read the definition before comparing placement numbers.

  • Use AI to support practice, not replace it. Your next assessment may test both independent reasoning and how you check an assistant's output.

  • Clear CVs, explicit offer terms and verified scholarship applications are practical ways to move forward this week.

Career Trends & Job Market Pulse

Enterprise AI is becoming business work, not just a course category.

In its 8 October results, TCS reported annualised AI revenue of US$3.1 billion and highlighted transformation partnerships involving Porsche and Best Buy. Annualised revenue is a run-rate measure, not money earned entirely in one quarter. These results do not establish a hiring boom or guarantee graduate vacancies. They do offer a useful direction for preparation: understand how technology fits into a real organisation's operations, customers and existing systems.

For an early-career candidate, a small, well-explained workflow project can be more useful than another broad claim of being an AI enthusiast. Show what the tool does, where it makes mistakes and how a person checks its output.

A career-path percentage is not automatically a placement rate

IIT Madras's 2025–26 Career Pathway Centre report counts employment alongside entrepreneurship, higher studies and preparation for civil services or other competitive examinations within its career-path definition. Those are different outcomes. Its figures describe that institution's cohort and reporting snapshot, not every engineering graduate's prospects.

Why it matters

Both company results and campus reports can help you ask better questions. Neither should become a shortcut to judging your own prospects by a single headline number.

What you can do

  • Read two relevant job descriptions and identify the business problem behind their technical requirements.

  • Before comparing campus figures, check what the outcome category includes, who was counted and when.

First Job & Career Growth

Give your side projects a clear place in the offer conversation

If you build apps, write, freelance or contribute to open-source projects, ask how the employer's intellectual-property and outside-work terms apply to those activities. Do not assume that using a personal laptop or working after hours automatically settles ownership. The wording and circumstances need to be checked, rather than guessed from a generic internet answer.

Before signing, identify any existing work you want to keep separate and ask for written clarification on permitted activities, disclosure requirements and conflicts of interest. For a consequential ambiguity, seek qualified advice. This is a question to resolve calmly before joining, not a reason to assume every employer is hostile to personal learning.

Make a job move easier with a proper handover

A useful handover records what is complete, what remains, who owns the next step and where approved documentation lives. Keep company material in authorised systems and follow the organisation's return and access-removal process. Do not wipe a work device or move business files to personal storage without instructions.

Why it matters

A good transition protects both your next step and the work you leave behind. Written clarification also gives you a firmer basis for planning projects outside your day job.

What you can do

  • List existing projects and unresolved offer questions before your acceptance deadline.

  • Build a short handover covering responsibilities, blockers, documentation and equipment-return arrangements.

Skills, Tools & Learning Corner

Keep some practice deliberately AI-free

Research covered by UC Berkeley on 9 October found reduced persistence and accuracy after AI assistance was withdrawn in controlled maths and reading tasks. That is not proof that every use of AI damages learning, or that the effects are permanent. It is a useful warning about confusing an assisted answer with independent understanding.

Try a three-stage session: attempt the task yourself, ask for a hint or critique, then close the assistant and solve a fresh version. For coding, explain why the solution works and test an edge case. For quantitative preparation, reconstruct the method without copying the worked answer. The final independent attempt is your progress check.

Choose depth you can demonstrate

A manageable project should have a clear problem, a working result and a short record of decisions. Improve one part that matters: input validation, error handling, test coverage or a clearer explanation of the design. Adding tools is worthwhile when they solve a problem, not merely when they lengthen the technology list.

Why it matters

You can benefit from faster feedback while still building the ability to work without it. A project you understand also gives you concrete material for an interview.

What you can do

  • Add one independent practice block to this week's preparation.

  • Pick one project improvement and document the problem, change and test result.

Resume, LinkedIn & Personal Branding

Make the CV easy to read before trying to outsmart a parser.

Greenhouse's documentation identifies columns, graphics, tables and contact details in headers or text boxes as possible causes of incomplete parsing. Crucially, a parsing problem is not the same as automatic rejection: its guidance says the document can remain attached while fields need manual correction.

A simple, text-based layout is a sensible starting point. Follow the application's file requirements, then check the name, contact details, dates and employment history that were filled automatically. Copying the document's text into a plain editor can expose a scrambled reading order, although it cannot guarantee compatibility with every hiring system.

Let the project support the skill claim.

If your CV lists a framework or tool, be ready to explain what you used it for, what you personally built and where it did not work as expected. Academic and independent projects can demonstrate genuine ability without being relabelled as employment. Keep the same distinction clear on LinkedIn.

Why it matters

Presentation should make real experience easier to assess. Neither a sophisticated template nor an inflated experience claim can substitute for work you can explain.

What you can do

  •  Review the application's populated fields before submitting.

  • Replace one vague skill claim with a truthful example of how you used it.

Interviews, Readiness & Opportunities

Prepare for questions about how you work with AI.

HackerRank's current interview tools include AI-led conversations and environments where permitted AI assistance can be observed. This does not mean every employer uses the same format or allows the same tools. Read your invitation carefully and ask about the rules if they are unclear.

Practise describing a project decision aloud, responding to a follow-up and checking a generated suggestion. If AI is permitted, explaining why you rejected an incorrect answer can be as useful as producing working code. If it is prohibited, prepare to work independently rather than treating a hidden assistant as a backup.

Check scholarship support alongside placement preparation.

Reliance Foundation's undergraduate portal lists applications for 2026–27 as open. Its programme supports up to 5,000 students through merit-cum-means selection, with grants of up to ₹2 lakh over the degree. The published income threshold is under ₹15 lakh; first-year enrolment and other eligibility conditions also apply. The grant is not a guaranteed annual payment of ₹50,000 to every applicant.

Why it matters

Readiness includes understanding an assessment's rules and making use of legitimate education support. Both can be tackled before the next interview arrives.

What you can do

  •  Record a short project explanation and practise answering an unexpected follow-up.

  • Check the official scholarship portal for the current deadline, full eligibility and required documents before applying.
