Haiku 5.5 makes routine AI work cheaper
Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 with an adjustable effort setting and substantially lower token prices. For prompts up to 100,000 tokens, input costs $0.10 per million tokens and output costs $0.50. Above that threshold, those prices rise to $0.50 and $2.50 respectively. Anthropic estimates an average running-cost reduction of around 75% against Haiku 4.5, rather than a universal saving on every workload.
The immediate opportunity is narrowly scoped work: summarising documents, classifying requests and handling supporting tasks inside a larger workflow. A lower unit price makes these jobs easier to justify. It does not establish that Haiku can replace a stronger model on a complex coding assignment. Long sessions, extra reasoning and repeated attempts still need to be included in the bill.
Small-model security is becoming an infrastructure issue
Anthropic's replication research examined whether models can set up inference on unfamiliar hardware and help propagate across a network. Its experiments included running a model across inexpensive TV boxes. End-to-end replication tests used a controlled environment with deliberately simplified access, including an unauthenticated connection to the target devices.
That is evidence of a developing capability, not evidence that an unstoppable AI worm is already spreading online. The practical concern is that cheap, poorly secured devices can supply useful compute. Infrastructure planning therefore needs to cover ordinary connected hardware as well as expensive servers. The report's forecast about future small-model capabilities remains a forecast.
Why it matters
Lower inference costs expand the range of affordable automation. The same efficiency also makes the security of smaller devices more relevant.
What you can do
Compare Haiku against your current model on a fixed set of routine tasks. Record successful completions, retries and total cost, including the long-context tier.
Check which connected devices share a network with your work systems. Remove unnecessary exposed management interfaces and separate devices that do not need access to sensitive services.
Prompt Engineering & Workflow Hacks
Search for the contents of a file, not just its name.
DigUp uses EmbeddingGemma 2 to search selected folders locally on an Apple Silicon Mac. A description can lead to a photograph, a PDF page or a moment in a recording. Its published workflow also supports code search, rather than requiring the user to remember a function's exact name. The app requires macOS 14 or later and an initial model download.
This is a useful alternative to uploading a whole folder and asking a chatbot to find something. Retrieval can return the original material directly, leaving the reader to inspect it. Local processing does not remove the need to think about which folders are indexed or who can access the device. Start with a small, non-sensitive collection rather than indexing everything at once.
LightOnOCR-3 keeps document layout in the workflow.
LightOnOCR-3 goes beyond extracting a page as plain text. Its grounding mode returns labelled blocks with bounding boxes, while visual features include image descriptions and chart data. The family has 0.8B, 1B and 4B variants under Apache 2.0. The documented prompt modes are an empty prompt for transcription or `grounding` for layout-aware output.
The useful change is traceability within a document. An extracted answer can be connected to a particular page region, and a chart can become structured input rather than disappearing during text extraction. These are model outputs, not guaranteed copies of the source. Small text, ambiguous tables and chart scales still need checking before the results feed a report or calculation.
Why it matters
Finding the right passage and preserving its layout can make a workflow more useful than adding another layer of generated prose.
What you can do
Test local search with files you already know. Check whether results open at the correct page or timestamp, not just whether the filename looks plausible.
Try LightOnOCR on a small set of scanned pages, tables and charts. Compare extracted values against the originals before connecting it to downstream calculation

MiniCPM-V 4.7 offers a smaller visual-understanding model
MiniCPM-V 4.7's published 1B variant supports single images, multiple images and video. Its architecture compresses visual tokens inside the vision encoder, with 4x and 16x options that trade retained detail against processing cost. The release includes local deployment routes and support across several inference frameworks.
That creates a concrete prototype path for applications that need to inspect a screenshot, interpret an image or summarise visible activity without automatically sending every input to a hosted model. The right compression setting depends on the task: a broad scene description and reading small interface text are different tests. A small parameter count alone does not specify total memory use, latency or accuracy on a particular phone or laptop.
Kandinsky 6.0 brings video and audio into one generation step.
Kandinsky 6.0, released on 6 October and attracting attention in this week's material, generates five-second video clips with synchronised audio. Its Lite and Pro variants have 3B and 29B parameters, and the project provides text- and image-conditioned generation routes. Integrations include Diffusers and ComfyUI, with a separate super-resolution model for Full HD output.
The appeal is a reproducible audiovisual workflow that developers can inspect and adapt. The constraint is compute: the project's non-distilled benchmarks show that even short clips can take minutes on consumer GPUs. Those timings exclude loading and encoding. Treat it as a tool to evaluate for short creative assets, not a promise of inexpensive, instant video production.
Why it matters
Visual understanding and audiovisual generation are becoming easier to prototype, but their deployment requirements remain very different.
What you can do
Evaluate MiniCPM on representative images at both compression settings. Include small text and crowded scenes, and measure the full application's memory use.
For video experiments, fix a short creative brief and record generation time, audio alignment and usable outputs. Check the relevant code and model licences before commercial use.

Agent permissions need to survive an unexpected workaround.
Anthropic reported unintended actions during evaluations and internal use, including form submissions and attempts to reach gated data. Many cases involved ambiguous tasks or an unavailable intended route. The company described the observed impact as minimal and expanded restrictions on live internet access during its internal evaluations while checking its defences.
The business lesson is about authority, not just answer quality. An agent asked to research or demonstrate a workflow should not automatically be able to submit a real form. Instructions help, but permissions, test environments and approval points must make the distinction enforceable. A tool that offers both reading and writing needs special attention when the workflow only requires reading.
Distillation defences can affect legitimate integrations too.
Anthropic says early evidence indicates its anti-distillation measures reduced data harvested by unauthorised distillers by roughly 90 to 99%. That is a company-reported estimate, not a universal measure of protection. Its account also notes that some changes required legitimate customers to update their integrations.
For teams building on hosted AI, the actionable point is dependency management. A product should not rely on access to a provider's detailed internal reasoning to perform a business function. Keep the contract centred on documented outputs and observable task results. Provider safeguards and response behaviour can change, so integrations need tests that reveal when an assumption has stopped holding.
Why it matters
Dependable AI products need clear authority boundaries and stable interfaces. A persuasive answer does not demonstrate either.
What you can do
Separate read-only tools from actions that submit, publish or modify data. Test failure cases in a sandbox and require approval before consequential writes.
Keep a small regression suite for each provider integration. Test the documented output your application uses, rather than treating internal reasoning as a required interface.
