Career Discovery Weekly Digest: AI Skills, Technical Growth and Smarter Applications
Date 26th October 2026
TL;DR
Infosys's latest results show growing AI-services revenue. Use that as a reason to connect technical learning to real business problems, not as a guarantee that graduate hiring has recovered everywhere.
A technical career can continue beyond senior engineer without becoming a people manager. Look for an employer's actual progression framework and the responsibilities behind its titles.
Build something small enough to understand thoroughly: an MCP integration, a Linux resource experiment or a neural network you can explain. Depth gives you more to discuss than another unexplained tool on your CV.
Search for internships using recent-posting filters, investigate product analytics alongside software roles, and practise explaining your reasoning when an interview question catches you out.

Career Trends & Job Market Pulse

AI work is becoming a more concrete part of IT services
In its 23 October results, Infosys said AI contributed 10.5% of revenue and grew 29% from the previous quarter. Its overall revenue grew 1.2% sequentially in constant currency. Those are business results, not a count of vacancies, but they give more substance to the AI conversation than predictions that every technology job will disappear.
For students and early-career professionals, the useful question is where your existing skills meet that work. An AI-enabled application still needs reliable data, software integration, testing and a clear purpose. Rather than abandoning your current preparation for whichever job title is trending, choose a problem you understand and show how you would build, assess and maintain a solution. These are preparation choices, not a promise of what a particular employer will test.
Why it matters
Company results can help you understand business priorities without becoming a verdict on your own prospects. A growing service line is a useful lead to investigate, while an application still depends on a specific role and its requirements.
What you can do
Read the responsibilities in a few relevant vacancies and identify which skills you can already demonstrate.
Add one practical AI related component to an existing project, with an explanation of when it helps and when it fails.
First Job & Career Growth
Management is not the only route beyond senior engineer
GitLab's published career framework describes separate technical and people-management paths, including progression into Staff Engineer roles. It is a concrete example of a technical leadership route, not evidence that every Indian employer offers the same structure or compensation.
The distinction matters when choosing your next role. Staff-level work can involve helping several engineers make better technical decisions, resolving difficult design problems and improving how teams deliver software. Staying technical does not necessarily mean doing exactly the same work for another decade.
Ask a prospective employer how its own framework works. What distinguishes a senior engineer from a staff engineer? Who has progressed along that route? What kind of responsibility is available? Look for a real need and a defined scope, rather than assuming either that years served guarantee promotion or that management is compulsory.
Why it matters
You can plan growth around the work you want to do. Understanding the available paths early makes learning and job comparisons more deliberate.
What you can do
Ask for examples of technical leadership in your team, including work that does not involve direct reports.
Identify one next-level responsibility you could practise, such as reviewing a design or helping resolve a recurring engineering problem
Skills, Tools & Learning Corner
Learn MCP as an integration skill, not a replacement for software fundamentals
Model Context Protocol lets AI applications connect to tools and data through a common interface. Hugging Face offers a free course, while the protocol's own documentation includes a server-building tutorial. These are existing learning resources, not courses launched this week.
A manageable exercise is to expose a small, non-sensitive dataset through a read-only tool. Give the tool a clear purpose, validate its inputs and decide what happens when data is missing. Keep credentials and private work out of the exercise. The result should be an integration you can explain, including its limitations. There is no need to claim that learning MCP in a week makes you job-ready or that conventional applications are obsolete.
Use Linux to investigate a system, not just memorise commands.
If you already know basic terminal commands, try understanding how a process uses resources. Linux's cgroup v2 documentation explains controls for groups of processes, including CPU bandwidth and memory limits.
On a disposable local environment, observe a small workload before and after applying a resource limit through a supported tool. Record the configuration and what changed. Keep the experiment away from shared or production systems. Explaining why a workload slowed down or reached a memory limit is a useful learning outcome in its own right.
Why it matters
These exercises connect tool knowledge to behaviour you can observe. They give you something specific to discuss in an interview or use as the starting point for a deeper project.
What you can do
Choose one exercise and write down its inputs, expected behaviour and failure cases before building it.
Keep a short record of what you tested and what you still do not understand.
Resume, LinkedIn & Personal Branding
Make a small project easy to examine.
A neural network that learns XOR can be a useful fundamentals exercise precisely because the dataset is small. Explain the forward pass, the loss and how the weights change. Show the output for all four input combinations, alongside the conditions under which you trained it.
The portfolio value comes from your explanation and implementation. Distinguish code you wrote from a tutorial you followed, acknowledge borrowed material and describe one change you investigated. A small educational network is not a production AI system, and it does not need that label to be worthwhile.
Make job discovery more focused.
LinkedIn's existing filters include date posted, location, experience level and employment type. Use them to separate internships from entry-level full-time roles and to review recent listings. That achieves the useful part of a search-URL shortcut without depending on undocumented parameters.
Recent does not automatically mean suitable, and an early application does not guarantee consideration. Check the actual requirements and application destination before spending time tailoring your CV.
Why it matters
Clear work samples and a focused search solve different problems. One explains what you can do; the other helps you find roles where that work is relevant.
What you can do
Improve one project description with a reproducible result and an honest statement of your contribution.
Save separate searches for internships and entry-level roles, with locations you could realistically accept.
Interviews, Readiness & Opportunities

When you do not know an answer, make your reasoning visible.
Microsoft's technical-interview guidance explicitly emphasises clarifying the problem, planning an approach and testing the result. That does not mean knowledge or correct code is optional. It does suggest a better preparation exercise than silently trying to remember an answer.
For a SQL question, first explain what the result needs to contain, how the tables relate and which edge cases matter. If you cannot recall a function's syntax, say so and distinguish that gap from the parts you understand. Practise reaching a working answer in the permitted language and tools. Do not assume every assessment allows documentation, pseudocode or AI assistance.
Product analytics is another internship route to investigate.
ShareChat's published Product Analyst Intern listing in Bengaluru describes SQL queries, work with behavioural data, API-related scripting and communicating findings. It is a useful example for students interested in how data informs product decisions, rather than only in building application features.
Check whether the opening is still accepting applications and read the current requirements before applying. A focused preparation task would be to analyse a small public dataset, define a metric and explain a limitation in the conclusion. Do not assume that an internship guarantees a permanent position, or that every role with “analyst” in the title involves the same work.
Why it matters
Preparation becomes more useful when it is tied to an identifiable role and an honest demonstration of your skills. You can practise both technical execution and clear communication without pretending to know everything.
What you can do
Rehearse one unfamiliar problem aloud, including a clarification, an approach and a test.
Check ShareChat's current Product Analyst Intern description and compare it with one software internship before deciding where to apply.
