Career Discovery Weekly Digest: Graduate Hiring, Practical Projects and Internships Worth Checking

Date19th October 2026

TL;DR

  • Infosys's graduate-hiring plan is a reason to keep preparing, not a promise of an immediate opening. Check the actual recruitment route and eligibility before applying.

  • Compare early-career roles by the work, supervision and written terms, alongside pay. Use interviews to find out what your first few months would involve.

  • Turn a project into something you can explain measure a bottleneck, justify a change and show how you test it. Your GitHub and LinkedIn profiles should make that work easy to find.

  • Honeywell's careers site lists Indian software and embedded-engineering internships. Verify each requisition directly rather than relying on a forwarded salary or deadline.

Career Trends & Job Market Pulse

Graduate recruitment remains worth preparing for

Infosys's plan to recruit at least 20,000 freshers for the financial year ending March 2027 gives graduates a concrete employer to monitor. The company stated that expectation in its April results conference, so it should not be mistaken for 20,000 newly opened vacancies this week. A company-wide hiring plan also does not establish your batch's eligibility, assessment date, salary or joining schedule.

The useful response is to prepare for an identifiable role while keeping other applications moving. Check the current official recruitment channel or your placement cell's verified notice, then separate the assessment requirements from the broader hiring headline. Do not postpone every other opportunity while waiting for a company-wide target to become a personal offer.

Why it matters

A recruitment plan is an encouraging direction, but an individual application needs specific details. Keeping those separate lets you prepare with purpose without treating uncertainty as a verdict on your prospects.

What you can do

  • Record the exact role, eligible qualifications and application route for each drive you pursue.

  • Keep a manageable shortlist of employers rather than building your preparation around one joining date that has not been confirmed.

First Job & Career Growth

Compare the work you will actually do.

A recognisable employer, a higher package and a promising title answer different questions. Before choosing between an internship, a graduate programme and a permanent role, ask what the first assignment involves, who reviews your work and how training connects to deployment. Separate a written full-time offer from an internship with a possible conversion.

Ask for clarity on fixed and variable pay, location, working arrangements, probation, notice and any service commitments. Where something consequential is unclear, request written clarification and appropriate advice before accepting. This is ordinary preparation for a decision, not a reason to assume every offer hides a problem

Ask about a working week, not just the culture.

A useful conversation with a future colleague can cover how tasks are allocated, how feedback works and what happens when deadlines move. Ask for examples of the team's routine. One person's description is a perspective, not a guarantee about the entire organisation. Keep confidential client or personnel information out of the conversation.

Why it matters

Early-career growth depends partly on getting work you can learn from and support you can use. Specific questions give you something more useful to compare than an employer's reputation alone.

What you can do

  • Compare offers using the same short list: responsibilities, supervision, employment type, pay and location.

  • Ask what successful progress would look like in your first three months, and who would help you reach it.

Skills, Tools & Learning Corner

Make performance work a lesson in judgement

Before adding caching to a backend project, establish how often the slow operation runs, who waits for it and where the time goes. PostgreSQL's `EXPLAIN` shows a query's execution plan. `EXPLAIN ANALYZE` also runs the statement and reports actual execution information, so practise with safe data and understand possible side effects before using it.

For a portfolio exercise, compare a query before and after one justified change. Record the dataset, test conditions and results. Then explain whether the improvement was worth the extra complexity. A small, reproducible investigation gives you a clearer engineering discussion than an unexplained claim that you made something ten times faster.

Try a delivery workflow before buying a DevOps course.

Choose one small application and make its tests repeatable. GitHub Actions supports workflows that build and test code on repository events, including pushes and pull requests. Practise making a test fail, reading the output and fixing the cause. Learn how configuration and dependencies affect a run before adding more tools.

This is an existing learning route, not a new certification requirement. If you later consider paid training, use your experience to ask what the course adds: reviewed exercises, troubleshooting practice, feedback and clearly defined placement assistance.

Why it matters

Both exercises move preparation beyond naming technologies. You have a result to inspect, a decision to defend and a mistake you know how to investigate.

What you can do

  • Save a short performance investigation with its assumptions and limitations.

  • Add a basic test workflow to a personal project without exposing credentials or private work.

Resume, LinkedIn & Personal Branding

Make a contribution understandable without a guided tour.

GitHub profiles can highlight repositories and contributions through pinned items and a profile README. LinkedIn's Featured section can showcase work samples and external links. Use those spaces to explain the problem, your contribution and where someone can inspect the result.

For a collaborative project, distinguish what you built from what the team delivered. A useful description might cover a query you investigated, a test you added or a feature you implemented, with enough context to assess the work. Only use measurements you can reproduce or substantiate. A public contribution demonstrates that work exists; it does not prove that an unsolicited recruiter is legitimate or guarantee an interview.

Review visibility before sharing. Keep employer code, customer data and internal documents in authorised systems, and choose a contact method you are comfortable making public

Why it matters

A profile can connect your skill claims to something inspectable. Clear explanations help a reviewer understand your contribution without inflated titles or invented business results.

What you can do

  • Improve one existing project description before adding another item to your skills list.

  • Check that your chosen work sample opens correctly and contains no confidential material.

Interviews, Readiness & Opportunities

Look beyond a single kind of engineering internship.

Honeywell's official careers site lists bachelor-level software and embedded-engineering internships in Hyderabad with 15 October posting dates. These are distinct routes to investigate, not interchangeable versions of a generic technology internship. Open the individual requisition to confirm the discipline, location and full requirements before applying.

The public listings do not substantiate the stipend ranges and batch restrictions circulating in every third-party roundup. Do not carry those details into your application plan unless the employer confirms them. Save the requisition reference and a copy of the requirements so your preparation stays tied to the role you actually applied for.

Verify outreach even when it mentions your work.

An email referring to a real GitHub contribution can still need checking. Confirm the employer and recruiter through an independently located official channel before sharing sensitive documents or installing assessment software. Infosys's existing recruitment warning explicitly states that it does not charge applicants fees or security deposits. Treat that as company-specific guidance, not a new announcement.

Why it matters

An application is more useful when the opportunity is identifiable and the preparation matches its requirements. Verification protects your time while leaving room to pursue genuine openings.

What you can do

  • Check the official Honeywell listings for a role that fits your current course and skills.

  • For unexpected outreach, verify the opening and assessment instructions independently before proceeding.
