Marketing Intelligence Weekly: Check the Numbers, Own the Changes

Date: 26th October 2026

TL;DR

  • Check your Meta ad destinations before 28 October. Product browsing can add an in-app step before a customer reaches your website, and the notice offers an opt-out.

  • Google's recent AI Search changes make source links more prominent, while Cloudflare's partnership with OpenAI highlights a separate challenge: getting useful pages discovered in the first place.

  • Google's Universal Cart is rolling out in the US, not India. It is a useful development for teams serving American shoppers, without being a reason to assume every customer journey now ends inside Google.

  • Just Eat has paused an AI menu-image trial after inaccurate pictures appeared. Product accuracy needs its own approval check, even when the creative looks convincing.

  • Bing's Topics Portfolio beta can help organise AI Search coverage. Its approximate citation measures are planning inputs, not traffic, sales or market-share figures.

Search, Social & Platform Updates

Google is making the links inside AI answers easier to find.

Its 15 October announcement, carried forward into this week's search agenda, describes more inline links appearing higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews. A separate test will highlight official destinations near the top of answers when a task has only a small number of appropriate sources. Google is also testing links from video creators' names to their Search profiles.

For a brand, these are different opportunities. An official product-support page helps someone complete a task. A creator profile helps someone understand who made a video. Neither is a promise of a ranking boost, and a test should not be described as universally available. Keep the relevant pages accurate and recognisable before treating the interface change as a new content tactic.

AI discovery is not the same as AI ranking.

Cloudflare and OpenAI's 15 October progress report describes a research pilot that helps OpenAI discover pages using signals from Cloudflare's network. The pilot began in July. The companies report that it has brought previously unknown pages into OpenAI's search index.

That does not establish that ChatGPT has abandoned backlinks or reveal its ranking formula. Discovery, access and selection are separate decisions. For a marketing team, the useful question is whether important pages can be found and read, not whether a speculative ranking shortcut has appeared. Cloudflare also states that discovery signals do not override a website owner's access choices.

Why it matters

Search work now includes checking how a useful page is discovered, how it is represented in an answer and where the customer lands afterwards. Those checks are more actionable than treating every AI-related announcement as a new optimisation discipline.

What you can do

  • Choose a few important customer tasks and check which page should answer each one. Make product details, eligibility, prices and contact information consistent across those destinations.

  • Ask your web team to check crawler access for those pages against the business's chosen policy. Keep observations about citations separate from claims about why an AI system ranked a source.

Paid Media & Acquisition

Meta's 28 October change deserves an account check now.

Its advertiser notice, reproduced in industry reporting, says product browsing will be added to existing ads unless advertisers opt out. A tap may open product information and recommendations inside Facebook or Instagram before a visit to the advertiser's site. The notice also points to controls in Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings.

Do not assume that one action covers every client or business portfolio. Confirm the account shown in the notice and inspect the settings on important live ads. This is an upcoming change, not proof that it caused an earlier sales decline. Nor does an in-app step, by itself, establish that all website tracking stops working.

Google's Universal Cart changes the US shopping journey, not the merchant's responsibility.

Launched on 15 October and circulating in this week's commerce coverage, it lets US shoppers save items from multiple retailers across Search and Gemini. It can track price and stock changes, surface savings and support checkout through Google Pay or a transfer to the merchant's cart. The merchant remains the seller of record.

For Indian teams selling into the US, the immediate task is to assess eligibility and keep product information consistent across the buying journey. For India-only businesses, this is a development to watch, not an available domestic channel to add to next week's acquisition forecast.

Why it matters

An ad click or a saved product no longer tells the whole story of where a customer browses. Measurement and creative reviews need to account for the destination experience as well as the advert that started it.

What you can do

  • Record the current destination settings on your highest-spend Meta ads before the deadline. If you change a setting, note the date and verify the result rather than assuming an opt-out succeeded.

  • For relevant US commerce activity, check product prices, availability and fulfilment information against the merchant's own records. Evaluate orders and profitability alongside platform-reported conversions, not just visits to the website.

Content, Brand & Communications

Just Eat's AI menu images show why product accuracy needs a separate review.

The company apologised and paused the rollout of an image trial after incorrect food pictures appeared. One widely reported error turned a Northern Irish soda-bread breakfast into ingredients floating in cola. The company said it was removing inaccurate images while developing the tool further.

The obvious mistakes are memorable. A more useful brand check asks whether a believable picture still misrepresents what a customer will receive. Portion size, ingredients, packaging and included accessories can all change the promise made by a product image. A label identifying an image as AI-generated does not make that promise accurate.

This is a product-review issue as much as a design issue. Someone who knows the actual item should approve its depiction before it enters a catalogue, advert or marketplace listing.

Why it matters

Creative production can become faster without making product approval less necessary. A polished image that sets the wrong expectation can create work for customer service and damage confidence in the brand.

What you can do

  • Compare generated product images with the real item or approved reference photography. Check what is included, not just whether the image looks professional.

  • Name the person responsible for product accuracy and keep approved versions identifiable. If imagery is wrong, correct affected listings before distributing more variations.

Measurement & MarTech

Bing can now group AI Search visibility into topics.

Its Topics Portfolio beta, announced on 13 October and included as recent context in this week's search coverage, sits within the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups grounding queries into themes and shows related opportunity queries. The view appears only where there is sufficient data for the site.

Microsoft describes the ecosystem measures as approximate and the classification as AI-generated. Treat a large topic as a starting point for investigation, not a guaranteed pool of customers. A citation is not a click, and neither establishes that the visit produced a qualified enquiry or sale.

The practical value is helping an editor see where coverage is concentrated and which related questions deserve a closer look. It does not remove the need to understand the audience behind those questions.

Why it matters

A content plan is easier to evaluate when its themes correspond to real customer needs. An approximate visibility report can inform that plan without becoming the commercial result it is supposed to support.

What you can do

  • If the beta appears for your site, review a topic relevant to your product and inspect the underlying queries before commissioning content.

  • Compare proposed opportunities with customer questions, existing pages and conversion data. Keep AI citations, website visits and qualified outcomes as separate measures in the report.
