Marketing Intelligence Weekly: New Video Formats, Ad Controls and AI Visibility
Date: 30th October 2026
TL; DR
Instagram is testing longer, horizontal video. Prepare content that can work as a full programme and as short excerpts, while checking access before committing production spend.
Performance Max can now source videos from approved channels. Review both the setting and the material those sources contain.
Etsy is pairing AI tools with a stronger emphasis on human creativity. Make the evidence behind your brand promise visible in the buying journey.
AI visibility figures need context. Separate the questions a study tested, the sources an answer cites and the customers your business actually acquires.

Search, Social & Platform Updates

Instagram is making room for longer stories.
In its 26 October announcement, Instagram introduced a limited test of Features, a format for longer, horizontal videos. It is also testing ways to connect short Reels to longer productions. Initial access is limited, including selected creators in Brazil and the US; this is not a confirmed general launch for Indian accounts.
The useful opportunity is to plan connected content. A product demonstration, interview or useful tutorial can support a complete episode and several short excerpts, each with a clear reason to watch further. That does not mean making every video longer. A short answer should stay short, and an extended production needs enough substance to justify the viewer's time.
Reels remain part of Instagram's plans. The announcement does not establish that long videos receive a universal ranking advantage, or that businesses should abandon the formats already serving their audience.
A missing page needs a purpose check before a repair.
Google's explanation of 404 responses, highlighted again this week, reinforces an established distinction: an intentionally removed page and a broken customer destination are different problems. Google does not index a URL returning a genuine 404 and can remove a previously indexed URL when it continues to return that response.
The priority is the page's job. A deleted item with no replacement may correctly return 404. An active campaign landing page, important product page or useful resource should not disappear accidentally. Where content has genuinely moved, the replacement should take users to the corresponding destination.
Why it matters
Format experiments create opportunities, but the basic journey still matters: what someone sees, whether they want to continue and whether the destination works. Those checks give teams a practical agenda without guessing at algorithm changes.
What you can do
Choose one existing interview, demonstration or tutorial that could support both an extended version and useful short clips. Check account eligibility before scheduling an Instagram Features launch.
Review missing URLs by business importance. Fix broken live destinations first and keep intentionally retired pages separate from accidental failures.
Paid Media & Acquisition
Performance Max can bring existing videos into paid campaigns.
Google's sourced-video setting lets its systems find material from approved social profiles, campaign landing pages and linked YouTube channels. It can add up to ten sourced videos to an asset group and refresh the selection over time.
Google says the setting is on by default for new campaigns and may have been activated on some existing campaigns during a platform update. Sources still require approval, and availability is being rolled out. The selected videos are uploaded to a Google-owned YouTube channel carrying the advertiser's branding.
The practical review therefore has two parts: whether sourcing is enabled, and which sources it can use. A channel may contain old prices, expired offers or demonstrations that no longer represent the product. Material suitable for an organic post also deserves a fresh approval before paid use. These are creative-governance checks, not evidence that automated sourcing necessarily performs worse.
Why it matters
An advertiser's approved asset library can extend beyond files uploaded directly into an ad account. Campaign reviews need to cover those source channels as well as the final adverts.
What you can do
Check Sourced videos and Manage sources in the relevant Performance Max settings. Record the approved sources and remove material that should not represent a current offer.
Review the sourced assets and their performance before expanding spend. Give someone responsibility for keeping the underlying videos accurate and approved for advertising.
Content, Brand & Communications

Etsy is treating human creativity as part of its product promise.
Its 28 October shareholder letter describes a strategy that combines AI-assisted discovery and seller tools with clearer policies and stronger enforcement intended to preserve authenticity. Its marketing also emphasises the people behind the products, while personalised recommendations combine machine learning with human curation.
That is a more useful distinction than assuming a marketplace must either embrace AI everywhere or reject it entirely. Automation can support administration and discovery while the customer-facing promise remains about who made an item, how it was made and what makes it distinctive.
For brands built around craft, expertise or provenance, those details belong in the buying journey. A production photograph, a clear materials description or an explanation of the maker's contribution can substantiate a claim that otherwise sounds interchangeable with competitors' copy. Etsy's account describes its own strategy; it does not prove that a particular creative technique will increase another business's sales.
Why it matters
When content becomes easier to produce, a brand still needs a specific reason to be chosen. Showing the evidence behind a promise gives customers something concrete to evaluate.
What you can do
Check one important product page for the evidence supporting its main claim. Make the relevant process, materials, expertise or provenance easy to find.
Define which tasks can use AI assistance and who checks the resulting customer-facing material. Keep product descriptions consistent with what buyers will receive.
Measurement & MarTech
AI citation reports describe a changing mix of sources.
Muck Rack's October report, updated on 28 October, puts journalism at 22% of citations in its September analysis, compared with 27% in May. Earned and third-party sources still account for more than 84%, but that broad category includes government, academic, encyclopedic and corporate sources alongside journalism.
The distinction matters for communications planning. A change in journalism's share is not evidence that independent coverage has stopped being useful. The report also finds differences between AI providers, so a brand's visibility in one system should not stand in for every other system. These are findings from the study's prompts and citation analysis, not a census of every AI answer or a measure of resulting purchases.
Search statistics need their denominator attached.
The broad AI Overview headlines circulating this week warrant the same care. Semrush's 21 October commercial-search study, useful recent context, tracked 400 selected US desktop keywords across banking, ecommerce and software. In that panel, coverage reached 88% in August, compared with 45.75% the previous September.
That is a meaningful result for the sample. It does not establish the share of all Google searches, describe Indian mobile results or measure how many customers clicked and bought. A comparison page and a product-pricing query may also produce different experiences, even when both receive an AI Overview.
Why it matters
A useful visibility report connects a defined question to an observable answer and then keeps commercial outcomes separate. Large percentages are easier to act on when the team knows exactly what was counted.
What you can do
Build a small, repeatable set of customer questions and comparison searches relevant to your market. Record the platform, date, answer, cited sources and factual accuracy.
Report citations, website visits and qualified enquiries or sales separately. Use your own audience's results to decide what to improve rather than importing a global headline into a local forecast.
